During my first day as a ۶Ƶ intern… I was very nervous!

I was a banking summer analyst in the Global Healthcare Group here at ۶Ƶ in 2010. As a summer analyst, you know that you are ultimately working towards a full-time offer with the firm, so with that in mind, my focus was on finding ways to be an integral member of my team. This meant finding a way to get up to speed as quickly as possible. As a result, I spent my first day introducing myself to my team and fellow interns, making sure my IT was properly sorted, and asking junior bankers if there were any tasks where they could use my assistance. I also spent a good amount of time my first day reading analyst research reports, especially the large and very detailed initiating coverage reports , to better understand sector trends, key players, and other details to give me enough knowledge to be dangerous!

I thought that working in investment banking was going to be… exactly like the movie Wall Street (the 1987 movie…I'm dating myself…)

I learned that while this job can certainly be exciting, it's not quite as dramatic as they portray it in Hollywood. Especially as an intern! A lot of your time will be focused on supporting the full-time analysts, associates, and directors. You’ll review financial analysis for ۶Ƶ clients, and create very detailed, well formatted PowerPoint slides, gathering and summarizing client/sector research, and triple checking materials to ensure there are no spelling mistakes, numbers that don't tie across the presentation, or other errors. That being said, you will quickly find that each client, engagement, and set of materials is quite different, giving you a very broad exposure to your given product or coverage universe in a very short amount of time.

If I could travel back in time I would tell myself … that you will inevitably make mistakes during your summer internship; however, it's okay!

The key is finding a way to make sure that you learn from your mistakes and try your very best not to repeat them. Having a positive attitude, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to bounce back is critical in this job as a junior banker. For example, if your team notices a typo in a 40+ page pitchbook, it may seem like the end of the world in the moment, but it isn't; simply recognize the error, let your team know that you are committed to improving your attention to detail as you progress during the summer, and then get right back to it! We're all human!

When challenges come your way... stay positive!

Internships, whether on Wall Street or in any other industry, can be very stressful experiences given how impactful they can be on your initial career journey. However, with each experience, you can only do your best, so be sure to bring a positive attitude to each and every assignment you have during the summer. As many offices remain in a work from home arrangement, take time to build virtual connections with your team as best you can, whether via a quick chat on the phone, or a scheduled Zoom call to have a more in-depth conversation. At the end of the day, these connections will be some of the most influential on your summer experience, learning opportunities, and ability to make an informed decision about pursuing a career in investment banking if you receive a return offer to ۶Ƶ.
