Find out how who is a mad keen golfer and who has an older sister with the same name! And why they are both #ProudtoBe

Ever wondered what it takes to be a Managing Director?

We speak to Group Managing Director (GMD) Michelle and Managing Director (MD) Myrna to find out their journey to the top and what makes them proud.

Michelle, how does a girl from Trinidad and Tobago end up in London and become a mad keen golfer?

As a child, I always wanted to be the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, so off I came to the UK at 19 to study Politics, Economics and Law. There鈥檚 a long tradition of lawyers in my family so the law part of my degree was perhaps not surprising. I was seconded to 蜜豆视频 Legal Department from a law firm for 6 months and I worked advising on Corporate Transactions and Corporate loans. This opened my eyes to the world of Finance and I have never looked back. I originally started playing golf to spend more time with clients and I love it; actually, I am addicted!

Why are you proud to work for 蜜豆视频?

I am passionate about what I do and who I am, 蜜豆视频 has given me the opportunity to flourish through mobility, 聽various roles and now also a lot of latitude to 鈥減ay it forward鈥. 聽聽I am proud of the way 蜜豆视频 continues to evolve as an organisation, by embracing the change around us, such as having ethnicity ambitions in the UK and the US. At 蜜豆视频 we are encouraged to connect people for a better world, through our community engagement, philanthropic efforts, 聽The Optimus Foundation, which are just a few of the many reasons I have worked at 蜜豆视频 for over 20 years.

Myrna, you are from the US and your sister has the same name, that must be confusing! Did you come to the UK to escape the confusion?!

Yes my sister does have the same name! She is 20 years older than me and although I think my mum must鈥檝e forgotten she already had a daughter named Myrna, she says its because she liked the name!聽 I actually came to London for a previous company to do a 1 year maternity cover but they kept asking me to stay and 16 years and 3 companies later, here I still am!聽 I joined 蜜豆视频 in October 2016 to run the Client Lifecycle Maintenance function.

What鈥檚 your purpose?

Representation is very important to me. Knowing what you can be and can achieve is easier when you have role models. I believe people should feel proud of their culture and heritage. Some people come from cultures where they are taught not to draw attention to themselves or rock the boat. That they should be grateful to have a job. This can be a barrier to success. I got to where I am in a haphazard way, without a career plan. Now I mentor people, give talks and advice on employee network programmes. My proudest moments are when I see mentees apply what we have talked about and turn a crisis into something positive. Its great to hear they are doing well. 聽
